History: Tony was your average spoiled-rich kid, everything he ever wanted was handed to him on a silver platter, he never had to work for anything, and his parents gave him everything he could ever want, except time and love. Howard and Maria Stark were the very essence of high society, living in a massive mansion, throwing extravagant parties every weekend for the whose who of the world wealthiest people. Every night, it seemed there was another event or function that they had to host or attend, leaving Tony alone with no one to talk to, save for his confidant, friend, and butler, Edwin Jarvis. Although Edwin was his manservant, Jarvis was actually the closest person Tony had to a friend or family member, and had practically raised the boy.
It was Edwin who would become guardian to 15 year old Tony, after his parents were killed when their privet jet crashed into a mountain, after the engine failed on their way back from yet another party. With his parents gone, Howard Stark's company went to Tony and Edwin, who after buying the company that manufactured the the plane that his father was flying, and made dozens of modifications that made the planes safer and cheaper to buy, giving the world it's first glance of Tony Stark's genius. However, that glance would take a huge toll on the young man, and he buckled under the pressure, though not publicly, and would begin drinking heavily, a battle he continues to fight, along with his many other addictions, such as gambling, women, and his work. Of all these addictions, the final was what had the deepest hold on him, as he was well known for locking himself in his lab for days at a time, not stopping to eat or sleep.
He was so driven by his work, that he often went out on to battle fields to see the effectiveness of the weapons he designed, first hand. It was at such a sight, while watching the US Military field test his company's newest missile system, he was gravely injured when the guidance system in one of the missiles malfunctioned, causing the missile to veer off course, crashing into the crowd and sending shrapnel everywhere, including a piece the struck Tony in the heart. Tony died twice on his way to a hospital, but was brought back and eventually saved due to an artificial heart that his company developed. While in recovery, Tony would learn that the accident had actually been a staged assignation attempt by one of his own employees, Obidiah Stane, who planned to kill Tony and take over Stark Enterprise. After learning this, he used an experimental battle armor that he was building for the military, and went after Stane. After a public battle between Tony and a one of Stane's metahuman bodyguards, which allowed Stane to make an escape and go into hiding, Tony took the name Ironman, and decided to try his hand as a superhero, pretending to be his own bodyguard as his cover.
